Mid-year SSLL Blast

This Sunday (April 27th) is our Annual Photo and Field Day with our Coach's Home Run Derby!

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!

If you can help on Sunday (for an hour or more), please contact me at wbockholt@yahoo.com. Our Dunk Tank Operator for the previous 2 years will not be available this Sunday, so there will NOT be a Dunk Tank unless we get a LOT of help! We also need help with the Hit-a-thon!

Coach's Home Run Derby

Managers, coaches (and parents, too) can participate in our 3rd Annual Home Run Derby. Contact Doug Warmke, if you'd like to participate. (There will be prizes!) Start time is 10:00 am at Faber field.

Team Photos

If you have not yet been contacted by your Team Administrators with the time for your team photos, you can find the schedule here.

Please note: Every player receives a Memory Mate set with registration. (One individual and one team photo). Additional photos can be ordered on the form. All players must have a completed form.

Hit-a-thon

Our only player-driven fundraiser will be happening all day.

Immediately after your photo time, please come with your team to Faber field. Each player will have 3 opportunities to hit a baseball from a tee. We will measure and mark the longest hit on a Sponsor envelope which the player takes with them and returns with pledge money. (The players will then be released to their parents.)

Hit-a-thon PRIZES
  • Turn in an envelope with a pledge of ANY amount and Win a Sunnyvale Southern Baseball Wristband.
  • Raise $25 and Win a Sunnyvale Southern T-shirt.
  • Player on each team who hits the ball the farthest wins a NEW baseball.
  • Top 3 Money Earners win a Sports Authority Gift Certificate.
  • Highest Money Earner gets 2 tickets to a San Francisco Giants game.

Come for the photos! Stay for the Fun!

See you Sunday.

    Thursday, July 20th

All our post-season teams have concluded their tournaments at this point, and the District 44 Champions have been determined.

The 9-10 AllStars had a bit of a rough start to their tournament, losing to Moreland 21-6 in their first game. Moreland's pitching and hitting were a real onslaught. The team's second game was much better. They played Serra and won 14-7. Taiki and Aaron pitched well, while Trevor, Blake, Jon, and Tyler each had multiple hits in the game. The tournament ended for the 9-10's against Santa Clara Westside. Westside's pitcher dominated the game. Henry sent a ball clear to the fence for a double, but that was the only hit of the game in a 10-0 loss.

The 9-10's worked hard under Coach John and Coach Tony, and had a fun post-season. Congratulations to the team! Santa Clara Briarwood was the final winnder of the District 44 9-10 AllStar Tournament.

The 10-11 AllStars played in their inaugural season for SSLL this year. They also drew a tough first-round match-up against Moreland, which resulted in a 20-2 loss. The second game was better. The kids played Serra and lost 6-1. Tony pitched well and the team looked like it was starting to come together. Congratulations to Coach Kevin, Coach Chris, and the team! Moreland LL was the eventual winner of the 10-11 AllStar tourney, and will advance to the Section 5 tournament.

The 11-12 AllStars showed a lot of improvement over last year. They played good defense all around, and showed good tenacity at the plate. They lost the first game to Cupertino American by a score of 7-3. The game included an exciting inside-the-park 3-run home run by Nikko in the 6th inning. The team went on to play the always tough Campbell in the 2nd game and lost that one 9-3. The two starting pitchers (Victor and Nikko) are only 11, so watch out next year, District 44! Congratulations to Coach Vic, Coach Dave, and the team. SC Briarwood ended up taking the Major AllStar District 44 Championship with a 10-0 win over Los Altos.

The 13-14 AllStars got off to a good start in their first game, as noted previously. The next two games didn't quite go so well, with a 10-4 loss to Los Altos and a 18-5 loss to Cupertino National. It turns out that those two teams duked it out in the Championship game, so the SSLL Juniors lost to some pretty heavy duty contenders. Congratulations to the team! Cupertino defeated Los Altos 4-2 in the first game of the series, but Los Altos came back with a 4-0 win in the final Championship game.

SSLL showed improvement in every AllStar division this year. I hope that the new batting cages and the pitching clinics had something to do with that, and I hope we can continue to improve in these important skills over the next years. It takes a lot of dedication, focus, and participation on the part of everyone to build really strong baseball players out of our kids. In observing other leagues like Briarwood and Campbell over the years, I can't help but notice their strong dedication to repeatedly practicing the basics, week after week. Please keep up the good work, everyone. Let's keep making noise in the District and continue the great progress we showed this year!

Finally, a note of thanks to all the volunteers who helped prep the fields, run the snack shacks, keep score, and announce in the 26 post-season games that we hosted on SSLL Fields this season. In general our tournament games went really well, and much credit goes to Gary Hinds, our hard working SSLL Tournament Director. Thanks Gary!!! Other special thanks goes out to Lisa Miller, Amy Jasper, Sandy Agbayani, and the other stalwart snack shack volunteers. Great job, all.

    See you next season!

    Monday, July 3rd

    Southern Nines

The "Southern Nines" reached the semifinals of the Campbell LL 9 year old Friendship tournament. In the semis last Thursday they faced Briarwood LL, always a tough match-up.

Briarwood jumped out to an early lead, but Southern played tough and held the game close, trailing 4-1 after three innings. In the 4th inning Justin Miller roped a bases-loaded double to the left field fence, way over the head of the Briarwood left-fielder. That brought the game to 4-3. The game moved into the fifth inning with Southern trailing 7-5. At that time Briarwood poured on the hits, and Southern's defense faltered a bit. Briarwood finished up a 12-5 victory in six innings.

Great job by Manager Steve Hance and the Southern Nines to reach the semis of the tournament. We were unable to pitch two of our strongest pitchers (due to illness and due to running out of innings per week) and we still played well against the traditionally strong Briarwood team.

Moreland LL went on to win the tournament, defeating Briarwood 8-5 in the Championship game on Friday.

    SSLL Junior AllStars

The Junior AllStars got off to a great start last Friday, jumping all over TriCities for an 11-1 victory in five innings.

Mikkie Louthan pitched a great game for Southern, only allowing one run on 3 hits and 2 walks in five innings. Chris Latini hit a 2-RBI triple in his only plate appearance. Southern's defense was great, too, only committing one error all game. The Tri-Cities fifth inning ended on a 1-6-3 double play turned by Southern. Game over by way of the 10 run rule!

Congratulations to the Junior AllStars on their first-round win. Next up is the strong Los Altos LL Junior AllStars. The game will be played at Los Altos High on Thursday 7/6 at 5:30pm.

    Wednesday, June 28th

SSLL A's WIN the Minor TOC Championship!

The A's defeated the Moreland Diamondbacks 10-9 in the Championship game at Washington Park on Tuesday night. This appears to be the first baseball TOC Championship for Southern in its 49 year history!

This time the Fighting A's had to fight their own nerves, as they struggled to hold onto a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. But the lead held, and with the tieing run at 3rd base, pitcher Aaron Johnson got the game-winning strikeout in the nick of time.

The game was very well played by both teams. Moreland out-hit the A's 15 to 7. The A's outpitched Moreland, giving up only 1 walk while taking 8 walks off Moreland pitching. Both teams played excellent defense and showed impressive baserunning skills.

See http://www.district44.org for a more thorough recap.

The Champion A's will be honored at AllStar Night tonight (Wednesday, June 28) at McKelvey Field in Mountain View, 6:00pm.

Thanks very much to all the Southern fans who came out to cheer on the team! It was a tremendous display of league spirit.

Southern 9's advance to Campbell 9-year-old Tournament semifinals

In other news, the 9-year-old tournament team managed by Steve Hance has advanced to the semifinal round in the Campbell 9-year-old Friendship tournament. They will play tomorrow night (Thu) at Campbell's Major Field on Hamilton Ave.

The Southern 9's defeated the Metro 9's by a score of 17-10. In contrast to the A's pitching and defense strategy, the 9's decided to bludgeon the ball with the bat. In the second inning 15 Southern batters came to the plate. The first 9 all scored, making for a very interesting black streak down the second column of the scorebook!

Pitcher Taiki Maeda recorded the win for the 9's, and Steven Kwan wrapped up the game in the last two innings, only allowing one run to score.

    Saturday, June 24th

Minor A's Advance to TOC Championship!

Thanks to everyone who came out to Faber Field to watch the Minor A's play against the Campbell Kiwanis in the TOC semifinals.

For those SSLL members who don't know what a "TOC" is, that means "Tournament of Champions". Our league is one of 14 leagues in Little League District 44. In the Minor and Major divisions, each league presents a champion to play in a district wide tournament, the TOC.

Yesterday the A's fought a very tough battle against Campbell. Campbell had beat both their previous opponents by wide margins, 18-8 and 16-2. Both games were halted due to the 10 run mercy rule.

In the tournament semifinal game, our A's held Campbell to only 2 runs through four innings behind rookie pitcher Erik Krogstad. Campbell broke through for 3 runs in the fifth and 3 more in the sixth. The A's advanced runners to 2nd and 3rd in several innings, but couldn't find the timely hit to bring the boys home for runs.

Entering the bottom of the sixth, the A's were down 8-0. Miraculously, the A's sent 14 hitters to the plate in the inning. A combination of walks, hits, a groundout, and a hit batter gave the A's a 9-8 victory in the game!!!

The A's have been coming back to win games all season, but this one was the king of all comebacks.

Congratulations to the A's. They will play in the TOC Championship game on Tuesday evening at 5:30pm at Washington Park.

Please come out and cheer for the A's!!! Bring folding chairs, lawn furniture, whatever it takes to enjoy a game and show support for SSLL in the District Championship. Your support is appreciated!

For more complete news on the TOC, see the District44 website at http://www.district44.org.

And, now, here are your Victorious A's (click on the picture to get a much bigger version):

Southern Eight Year Olds WIN District 44 Championship!!!

Cupertino National Little League hosted the District 44 coach pitch tournament on June 24th. Six leagues sent teams to participate. The tournament was a modified double-elimination tournament played at Jollyman Park in Cupertino. Each game lasted 4 innings, and each inning had a 5-run limit except the fourth inning.

The games started at 8:30am. The Southern 8's got off to a good start in the morning, winning both their games with ease. They hit the ball hard, and the defense stonewalled the efforts of the Serra 8's and the Cupertino National 8's, limiting each team to less than 3 runs.

In the afternoon 3 of the squad had to leave to play in the A's TOC game. The remaining 9 players held down the fort, beating the Los Altos 8's by a score of 11-6 in the afternoon game.

Finally the Championship game was played at 6:30pm. Perhaps buoyed by the return of the 3 A's and the news of the victory at Faber, the Southern 8's went all out and defeated Los Altos by the convincing score of 19-1.

Congratulations to the Championship Southern 8's!!!

    Friday, June 23rd

Here is the news on our post-season team results so far.

The Major Mariners won the Major Division Championship and advanced to the Tournament of Champions. They faced the Santa Clara Briarwood Pirates in their first round game. The Pirates pitching was very tough, and the Mariners came away from the game with a loss in spite of a great effort. Since then the Briarwood Pirates have advanced to the semifinal TOC game vs. Los Altos, which will be played tonight.

The Minor A's won the Minor Division Championship and represent SSLL as our Minor TOC team. The A's have had a great week of TOC baseball.

On Tuesday, the A's played the Serra Red Sox. Despite giving up 14 hits, the A's defense made clutch plays and held the Red Sox to only 5 runs. Good defense combined with solid baserunning led to a 6-5 victory.

On Thursday, the A's played the Cupertino National Braves in 100 degree heat. The game was knotted up 2-2 going into the top of the 6th. The Braves scored 2 runs on 2 outs to go up 4-2. But the A's came back to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the 6th!

In the 7th inning the Braves went up 7-4 on solid hitting. It looked grim, but the fighting A's came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to knot it up again at 7-7!

In the 8th, the Braves went up yet again, 8-7. Gah! Finally, in the bottom of the 8th, the A's won the game 9-8 on two walks, two steals, and a 2-run walk-off single. Game time: 2 hours, 35 minutes. Exhausting for everyone, players and fans alike!

The A's will play in the Minor TOC semifinal game right on our own Faber Field, Saturday afternoon at 3pm. Please come out and cheer on the team for SSLL! It will be a tough game against Campbell LL. Campbell has 10-runned both their opponents so far in the tournament. Hopefully they are low on pitching after already playing 2 games this week!

Take a look at http://www.ssll.org for more news on TOC's and AllStars.

    Go SSLL!

    Sincerely,
    Doug Warmke
    SSLL President

    Hello SSLL Families!

We have finished rescheduling all the 2nd half games as per our "Rain Recovery Plan". Thank you for bearing with all this rain. I hope you're all really happy to see plenty of ball games being played out on the fields now!

You can find the revised schedules on the website at http://www.ssll.org/ssll-schedules.html.

Also note that the Snack Shacks have been correspondingly rescheduled. The new Snack Shack schedule has also been uploaded to the web site.

All previous game and snack shack schedules are invalid. Please throw out anything you already have and start over.

    ****

The SSLL San Jose Giants game will be this Sunday, Apr 30. As part of your registration fee, each player should have received four tickets for the SJ Giants game. If you haven't received them yet, please contact your team administrator or manager. Hint: Many SSLL Families sit over in the bleachers and picnic tables along the 3rd base line. That's a fun place, near the food, where the kids can chase foul balls and play around a lot.

    ****

The First Annual SSLL Field Day will take place Sunday, May 7. That is the rescheduled Photo Day, and the Hit-a-thon will take place at the Field Day, too. Please make every effort to attend your team's photo session. Since Photo Day is so late in the season, it won't be possible to get any make-up day photos into the annual Yearbook.

Also, we are looking for volunteers to participate in the coach's home run derby. Any league parent can be considered a "coach" for this event. Please let me know if you would like to participate. It takes place at 11am at Faber Field. Email me at doug_warmke@mentor.com.

    ****

Speaking of the Yearbook, I would like to remind you that the photos for the yearbook come from YOUR photos. It would be a good idea for each team to have at least one designated photographer. You can drop photos and/or CD's into the black SSLL Yearbook Photos drop boxes in each snack shack. You can also email them to our Yearbook Director, Jane Kwan. Jane's email address is jane_kwan2000@yahoo.com. Please make sure digital photos have sufficient resolution (2Mpixel or higher), otherwise they will be unusable.

    *****

Have a great Spring of Baseball, everyone!

Welcome to Sunnyvale Southern's 2006 Season!

For those of you who are returning league families, it will be great to see you out at the fields and at the snack shack again. And if you are a new league family, you are in for a treat. Welcome!

Our league is run 100% by volunteers. Almost all of them are parents of players. All our games, uniforms, equipment, and activities are only made possible by volunteers committing their time and energy to our kids. Thank you for all you do.

We have a great season planned this year. Our Opening Day Ceremonies and Barbeque will be held starting at 9:30 am on Saturday, March 25. Please make sure to attend both the ceremonies and the BBQ. It's a lot of fun and a great way to get to know other league families.

If you haven't noticed already, we have a brand new batting cage ready for league use at De Anza Park. This was the result of many years of savings and hard work by SSLL. I hope our players benefit a lot from this new facility and start hitting up a storm at game time!

This season marks our first annual "SSLL Field Day". It will be held on Sunday, May 7th. We will combine Photo Day, the Hit-a-thon, a Coach's Home Run Derby, and other fun activities all into that one day. Come on out and enjoy - let's make this a really fun and worthwhile league tradition.

You can keep current with League events, schedules, and all kinds of other information by regularly visiting this website. We also have a league email list, which I strongly encourage you to sign up for if you're not on it already. It's the best way to get late-breaking league news. Please email me at doug_warmke@mentor.com if you would like to get on our email list.

Finally, please do your best to support ALL the players, coaches, and umpires. (Not just your team!) Positive energy will reflect its way all over the league, into every youngster, and make the season as enjoyable as it can possibly be.

Thanks and have a great Spring!

    Spring, 2005 Message

Welcome to the 2005 Season at Sunnyvale Southern! This is our 48th year of operation. Wow. Over those years SSLL has helped bring the ideals of Character, Courage, and Integrity to thousands of children.

This wouldn't be possible without the enthusiasm and participation of the league community. Each year dozens of families contribute their time and energy to the league, in both small and large ways. I would like to thank everyone who helps out. It is all about the kids, and I think our league knows that better than most.

We are planning on having a terrific season with many fun events, and of course some real good softball and baseball. Some of the events are the Hit-a-thon, the annual San Jose Giants game, the Opening Day BBQ, Closing Day Ceremonies, Fundraiser nights at local restaurants, and more.

You can keep current with League events, schedules, and all other kinds of information by visiting the SSLL website regularly (http://www.ssll.org).

Finally, please do your best to support ALL the players, coaches, and umpires. (Not just your team!) Positive energy will reflect its way all over the league, into every youngster, and make the season as enjoyable as it can possibly be.

Thanks and have a great Spring!

    President Message 10/04

    Hello Everyone!

We had our first board meeting for the 2005 season on Monday, 9/20/04. It was very nice to see so many new faces on the board. A big thanks to all the new volunteers!

We still have two critical positions to fill:

    • Softball Player Agent
    • Jr/Sr Softball Director

Besides these critical positions the following are available:

    • Fields Director
    • Baseball Tournament Director
    • Yearbook Director

Please contact Doug Warmke if you are interested in volunteering some of your time to our Little League.

We plan on having a fun year, with a special focus on player development and participation. A major goal for us this year is to increase our league's enrollment. Little League enrollment has been down district-wide for the past several years. The best way to grow our league and have even more fun is if all current members talk it up and recruit friends to play. This is especially important at the younger levels: Kindergarten, First grade, etc. Please do your best to help recruit new players into the league.

    Have a great off-season.

    Best Regards,
    Doug Warmke

The Hit-Hit-Hit-a-thon competition has concluded and the money needs to be turned in to either Doug Warmke (VP of Operations) or Clark Meadows (League President).

The golf tournament is taking sign-ups so contact our resident professional Ken Boucher for details or send me your email and I will forward it to Ken.

The yearbook needs your pictures. Irene Macres, our yearbook coordinator, has arranged for a box at both snack shacks if you have pictures you would like considered. The deadline for turning in pictures is 5/27/04.

Check out this flyer and see the fundraising page for more information, participating restaurants and dates.

Closing Day is June 12 with TOC and All-stars just around the corner. Don't forget to volunteer in the snack shack.

All In all, this is another great season for Southern.

Hello! Be sure to check out the new changes on our links page and on the Hit-Hit-Hit-a-thon competition & prizes page. And if you and your family like to eat out, why not help benefit the League at the same time? Check out this flyer and see the fundraising page for more information, participating restaurants and dates.

Great news: Sunnyvale Southern Opening Day was a success. The Boy Scout Troop #466 Color Guard started it off with the presenting of the American Flag followed by the playing of the National Anthem by our very own Mikkie on flute. The dedication of Faber field at De Anza Park was a testimony to Larry Faber’s positive influence in our league and the many friends he had in passing.

The free for 5$ BBQ fundraiser was attended by about 700 hungry Southerner’s. Our Challenger division kicked off the season with the first game followed by baseball at our newly renamed Faber field and softball at Sunnyvale Middle School.

All In all, this is looking like another great season for Southern.

Great news: Last season's District 44 11-year-old Tournament winning SSLL baseball team will be available to sign autographs on Opening Day, March 20th. To date we have over 300 SSLL players registered and we anticipate another 50 or so in our lower T-ball division and in our Challenger division. The Umpire clinics have started, and they will continue every Sunday for the next month beginning at 11 am at the SMS field. Tryouts ended Saturday (2/7) and now we are in the process of drafting our teams. Players will be contacted by their new manager no later than February 23rd.

We will continue to accept player registrations but we can only guarantee positions in T-ball for players ages 5 to 8 years. The cost for T-ball is only $55 and this fee includes a complete uniform, team picture, trophy, San Jose Giants ticket, and more for players who do their best. We have a lot of returning managers this year and a few new ones at the lower divisions. All managers will be attending the Al & Al clinic this year to further hone their teaching skills. All In all, this is looking like another great season.

Hello! To date we have almost 300 players registered and we anticipate another 50 at the next two-tryout periods.

Tryouts begin this Saturday (1/31) and continue again the following Saturday (2/7). We will allow players to register at these two tryout periods but after February 7, for players above T-ball level, you may have to be put on a waiting list. We try to limit our team size to 12 players and we have a limited number of teams available.

Our sign-ups in the 7-8 year FARM coach/player pitch baseball division is doing so well that we were able to add another team to bring our total up to 6 teams.

We have a lot of returning managers this year and a few new ones at the lower divisions. All managers will be attending the Al & Al clinic this year to further hone their teaching skills, which will further help our players. All In all this is looking like another great season.

    January 1, 2004 Message

I look forward to the new season and hope Southern Little League is a positive experience for you and your family. Last year we had 368 Sunnyvale Southern players ages 5 to 18 years playing softball and baseball. This year we hope to increase these numbers and have even more fun.

So how are we going to have more fun?

Well here is a list of some of the new 2004 policies passed unanimously by our Sunnyvale Southern Little League Board of Directors:

    • Increased the minimum player participation time for all divisions to 50% for the regular season (i.e., 3-innings minimum for a 6-inning game.)
    • All players in Minors, Majors, Juniors, Seniors and Big League will be given the opportunity to play in the infield at least 4 times out of the first 10 games during the regular season.
    • All players in T-ball, Farm, and Pioneer will play in the infield at least 1 inning in every game concurrent to the 50% minimum player participation time.
    • Continuous batting order will be in effect in our regular season baseball games for our 5 to 12 year old player divisions.

Additionally, the board of directors and I have lowered the player registration fees even though the City has implemented a usage fee that will cost our league approximately $6,000. The approved budget for this season is $82,600. Our registration fees (35%), voluntary fundraising (14%), sponsors (8%), snack-shack (33%), and reserve account (10%) will balance this budget.

Teaching the kids how to play and have fun is the easy part but to operate and balance this budget will require a lot of volunteer time. Just to operate the snack shack we need approximately 500 volunteers for the regular 10-week season and another 100 volunteers for the 4-week post season. Just say "yes" when asked to help as your help allows us to keep your fees approximately 50% lower than some of the other leagues - as we don't have $50 mandatory fund-raisers in addition to the player registration fees.

So if you have not signed up yet, do it now! See you at the field on opening day March 20th, 2004.
